Listen, Trust, Follow…Repeat

Read: Luke 5:1-11

TrustListen, Trust, Follow…Repeat

Luke 5: 4 (NLT) When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper and let down your nets, and you will catch many fish.”

1.    “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Rom. 10:17) They first listened to Jesus preach, before they stepped out in faith.

2.    Four steps:
1.    Listen to Christ: Like Simon, and the rest, you don’t have to be a believer to listen.
2.    Loan Him your boat: Step out of your “convenient zone”, and do something with Him other than just listen.
3.    Take Jesus fishing: By faith, physically do whatever He tells you to do, even if it makes no sense.
4.    Leave your nets: Completely turn over your life to Him, leave old ways behind, and follow Him unconditionally.

Which step am I on now? Am I following Christ? I attend church, read His word, pray, treat others as I want to be treated; but am I really following Him? Am I still on the shore listening to Him preach? Have I trusted Him enough to completely leave my old nets behind? Like Simon, when He asked me to follow, I’ve told Him I’ve already tried and failed.

Lately, I have been worrying more than usual. I know it is wrong, but like an addict, I can’t stop myself.  I asked God for help. Then I spotted a sign which quoted Prov. 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him. He will make your paths straight.” Then at bible study, we studied Luke 5:1-11. Perhaps the reason I worry, is that I am still leaning on my own understanding and haven’t left my nets behind.

I have seen God’s great works in my life, where He has used me. There have been times, like Peter, I have walked on water with Christ. Then there are times like now, when I feel I am still on the shore afraid to move. Following Christ is not a destination, but a way of life, and a way to eternal life. His instructions are simple; listen, trust, follow…repeat.

Loving Father. Give me strength to always say “yes” to You. The times I worry, are the times I remain on shore leaning on my own understanding. LORD, please forgive me. Give me the wisdom and courage to go deep and fish with You. Help me to listen, trust, follow, and take the next step with You. In Your name I pray, Amen.
